Dragon Mage II: Chapter 43 - A Tense SituationAfter Angela was born, Serene told the Townleys to stay home for a bit. Rebecca could use the recovery time, and the help. Eric was happy to do his part. Unfortunately, he discovered that “his part” did include tending to messy diapers, as well as the more desirable, and attractive tasks, such as putting Angela down to nap, and preparing dinners.
Eric gagged as he changed one such diaper. The smell was overwhelmingly sickly sweet, which completely amazed him. How could such a little child produce such a powerfully disgusting smell? He couldn't remember being so close to vomiting without actually doing so. He tried to be quiet, since Rebecca was resting.
Angela clapped her hands and squealed happily.
Eric held the offending cloth at arm's length, grasping it tightly between his thumb and forefinger, not wanting to touch it. “Oh, proud of yourself, are you?” He looked at Angela with mock indignation, but wearin
Dragon Mage II: Chapter 42 - Birth“The question I have, is which one of you said you were bored?” Percy looked over the table at Eric and Rebecca, with a slight smirk.
They chuckled. Eric responded. “Believe me, we know better than to utter those words. We were perfectly happy, having no incidents.”
“At least,” Percy offered, “they know you're quite capable of handling a bad situation.”
“I'm sure the Council is well aware of how capable he is,” Rebecca stated good naturedly.
“Ha! In any event, I wouldn't want to cross him.” Percy was laughing lightly.
“Right,” Eric laughed along, “that's enough. I'll say outright, it wasn't fun. I don't want to be in that situation again. And if Rebecca is, especially given her situation now, there will be consequences for the person who called her out.”
Percy looked at Rebecca. “I did wonder how you were dragged into that.
Dragon Mage II: Chapter 41 - Taking ResponsibilityThe following day, only Eric arrived at the Council building. Rebecca had chosen to stay at home that day. Eric had reluctantly left her, but realized she was in good hands. He wasn't surprised to hear a knock on his door early on, and see Serene enter when he called.
Serene closed the door behind her, but remained standing, with her hands clasped in front of her. “Good morning, Eric.”
Eric nodded an acknowledgment. The previous night had been rough on him, and he was still groggy. “Good morning,” he managed.
Serene watched him for a moment. “Eric, is everything alright?”
Eric nodded. “Yes. Rebecca isn't feeling right. She's doing well, but her parents visited over dinner last night.”
Serene looked at Eric, puzzled. “I thought she would have liked to have seen them.”
Eric laughed, ruefully. “Nothing is ever easy when I'm involved, Serene.”
Dragon Mage II: Chapter 40 - Rebecca's ParentsIn the weeks that passed, Rebecca's pregnancy progressed smoothly. After the first two months, she started feeling better. Eric admired her shape, and she started enjoying her pregnancy. Eric noticed that Scarlet was spending a lot of time with and around Rebecca. In fact, he realized that Scarlet had spent a lot of time with Rebecca, ever since they returned.
Eric looked at Scarlet one evening, after they had their meal. “You knew about Rebecca from the start, didn't you?” He was curious.
Absolutely. We dragons have a sense for that.
Eric patted her gently. “Thank you. I know you're looking after her.”
Rebecca patted Scarlet as well, and spoke to Eric. “You know,” she started as she made herself comfortable on the couch, “there will be some huge changes around here.”
Eric smirked, and provided a jesting answer. “Now, Rebecca, we're only adding one perso
Dragon Mage II: Chapter 39 - Accidental DisclosureEric placed the papers of his proposal back on his desk as he heard the knock. “Come in,” he called.
Tevyn entered and closed the door. “Mr. Townley,” he nodded at Eric.
Eric glared at Tevyn. “What is it?”
Tevyn sighed slightly. “I had hoped you would not have taken as a personal affront, what was done.”
Eric sat. “What did you think would happen, when you took my first proposal into committee? Everyone knows that proposals go to committee to die.”
Tevyn blinked at the thought. “That is not necessarily true. Granted, it is correct that the committee process can filter out proposals that have no hope, or are completely inappropriate, but it also passes those that are appropriate and have a chance, to the Council for vote. It does work to accomplish both goals.”
Eric rolled his eyes. “I'm somehow not comforted.”
Tevyn approached a chair, and plac
Dragon Mage II: Chapter 38 - Jason's EncouragementJason ensured the Council Hall was silent, drank some water, and began. “Weeks ago, this Council voted to investigate the reports of an individual seeing something on Razor Ridge. To begin, the Council wishes to acknowledge the hard work done by several workers in preparing for the task, and in the duties they had to replace everything once it was over. This of course, fails to mention the task they undertook, to ensure that the individuals assigned to the exploration of Razor Ridge, were consistently supplied. Thank you.” Jason and the Executive applauded briefly; their actions were followed by the Council.
Jason stopped, then asked again for everyone's attention. “The Council also wishes to acknowledge Councilors Mr. and Mrs. Eric and Rebecca Townley, for their extraordinary efforts, executing the investigation and research with which they were charged. They looked into an area, at no small risk to themselves, to find answer
Dragon Mage II: Chapter 37 - AnnouncementsThe following weeks were relatively calm at the Council. Eric received reports from workers who inspected keeps, and signed off on them, approving recommendations when it was necessary. Everyone did their job, which made Eric's supervisory role both easy and minimal.
In the meantime, Rebecca exhibited some signs that concerned Eric. She would grow tired early in the day, and have to rest for some time before continuing her duties. She was in bed early, as well; when she woke up, she did not always feel well.
Eric was helping her sit up from the bed one morning before they had to leave. Rebecca was giving him instructions. “Slowly, please.” Her eyes were closed tightly, and she grimaced with obvious discomfort.
Eric was supporting her head in his arm, with his other arm behind her back. He carefully brought her to sit upright, over what he felt was an excruciating length of time. When Rebecca was seated upright, they both
Dragon Mage II: Chapter 36 - Dragon BloodThe three strolled through Merchant's Row slowly, taking in the sights. Their appetites were sated and they did not have a destination or timeline for the remainder of the day, other than a desire to be home at a reasonable hour.
Eric thought for a moment. “Serene, could I ask you something?”
Serene responded, somewhat lazily, “Yes.”
Eric was curious about the coat keeper they met when they arrived. “Might I ask who is this Thomas individual? There was something about him, and you seemed to know him.”
Serene sighed. She hesitated a few moments. “He and I went to the academy together. He was always quite the prankster, but a very bright boy. He was very kind, and had some high goals. By the time we were nearing the end of our schooling, he was getting ready to propose to me.”
For the first time, Serene was sharing something personal about herself. Eric was listening, intently and
Dragon Mage II: Chapter 35 - OverheardEric and the others walked down a short hall which led from the door into a large main area. The main area nearly swarmed with people; there was a rather loud, boisterous atmosphere to the area. Conversations were carried on between people who somehow managed to ignore everyone else. Servers deftly wove their way through patrons, carrying orders to their destinations. Noisy though it was, there was no hostility. Serene moved alongside the throng and found one of the side areas, which was a bit quieter than the main room.
Until now, Eric hadn't really noticed there were tables through the tavern. In the main area, there were few, and everyone was standing, seeming to have a good time. The appearance of people enjoying themselves did not diminish within the side room, but the atmosphere was quieter. Serene found a table. Eric pulled the chairs for Serene and Rebecca, seated them, and then himself.
Serene had opened her mouth to say
